Face book is getting several viruses sent around in links and when 1 person clicks on it then it can infect that system and depending on the virus and weather or not you have your username and password saved then it can also log into your account and pass along itself to others as you.
One of the first things you can do to get rid of infections is to delete the temporary internet files and restart the system to remove anything left in memory.
Here is a Screen shot of the temporary internet files option.
You will need to uncheck the default setting of Preserve Favorites website data in order to fully delete the malicious files saved in the temp folder.
Also it will delete the information for most sites that you saved login information for.
After you delete the files and restart the system then update and run you antivirus software. If you do not have any then you can download a free version of Microsoft Security Essentials
from here :
You will need to let it update then run a scan .
Also there is windows defender http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx
This program does some of the same stuff as Microsoft Security Essentials but is also have a few features that Microsoft Security Essentials does not.
also on my system after installing Microsoft Security Essentials it appears that it may have disabled Windows Defender which is easy to re-enable to use the other tools installed with it.(still researching that problem)
See this page here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/software.mspx
also is the Malicious Software Removal Tool that usually gets installed and from while using automatic windows updates found here : http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.aspx
all of these programs are made by Microsoft to help customers get rid of stuff.
If you still have a problem of re-infection right after running a scan then you will need to disable your internet connection by simply unplugging it. That keeps any programs from calling home for help. Then rescan ,delete the internet temp folders again.
Another program that is good for checking what is running or auto starting Autoruns developed by By Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell .
Mark Russinovich is now working for Microsoft as technical fellow.
You can get autoruns here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
This is a standalone program for finding what is auto starting and allot of time it can find malware left by virus scanners. once you run a scan you can save a copy and send it to me and i can open it and tell you what are possible changes to make or files and settings to remove.
Also download Process Explorer from here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Preventing future occurrences
To prevent future occurrences is totally impossible unless you are always updating and being on guard, but you can reduce the possibility of getting infected again.
first keep windows and your programs updated with latest versions and security releases. Use the latest version of Internet explorer 8 is the current version as of this writing.
You can use a option in IE 8 called smart screen filtering to help block known malicious websites. Also you can run in Protected mode.
run system scans occasionally to check for something that may have got thru, weekly or bi-weekly.
Always be careful on what links you click on.
When you download programs from the internet allot of them have a check box in the license agreement to also install a toolbar in IE, be careful on what you let install because some of these toolbars install adware to your system and are eating up your internet bandwidth and system resources.
In my opinion I would not allow any toolbars to be installed. They are also the cause of allot of crash and hang problems for internet explorer.
Remember to delete the temporary internet files or check the checkbox to delete every time(i just delete after doing bills or after I’m ready to quit)
That’s it for now.
